Aluminum Lugs

Aluminum wire and cable lugs have the advantage of being “dual rated” – this means that the aluminum lugs can accomodate both aluminum or copper wire. This property is normally only possible with lugs made from aluminum since the coefficient of expansion for the aluminum wire and the aluminum lug is the same, the aluminum wire is durable under heat cycling tests (UL486) which represent accelerated age testing of normal life cycle conditions.
Years of testing has shown that copper wire in aluminum lugs is also UL 486 durable, making aluminum lugs the universal wire and cable lug material for all common wire types and materials.
Just found out you can read the entire latest NFPA 70, NEC code book (2008 version) on line now at the NFPA website. You have to register but there is no cost and the whole book is readable. It is presented using Real Read viewing software. There is an icon bar at the bottom to turn pages and there is one on the far right that brings up a clickable index so you can jump to any article or page you want. Nice touch NFPA.
If your personal copy of the National Electrial Code book is an old as mine, this is a great way to see what you are missing and maybe work up the anti to get a new one for yourself.
